I have heard all manners of miraculous claims regarding hydroponics, how it yield 5 times more fruits, requires only water, etc.
However I am concerned about mineral deficiency. Minerals are most cheaply found in rich soil, and minerals are vital to our health. I have had mineral deficiency and I can confirm it must not be taken lightly.
Still, self-sufficiency should be our priority, to not only avoid depending on some foreign entity, but also to begin trading our goods with other states.
Any opinions on the matter?

I think plant growth through soil would be the more beneficial, especially if a tiered farm could be built to organise more plant growth at the same time in less space.

I would go for soil too. Intelligence is the ability to recognize what already works. Sometimes innovation may cause more troubles than simply sticking with what has always worked for millions of years.
What's a tiered farm?

A tiered farm is... think of a multistory car park, but farms on every level instead of cars.

Oh! This is equivalent to vertical farming.
Those are very interesting, however wouldn't the weight of the plants (and soil), and shadows from the stories blocking the sun, be a challenge?
